The catchy musical score by A R Rahman promised that Delhi 6 would be worth watching. On the first day, first show, within fifteen minutes, bored patrons were texting friends outside desperately not to watch the senseless story. By the time the news percolated to other cine-goers, the film was declared a flop even before it had reached its second show. The film’s production was delayed three years ago with few actors wanting to play the role that Abhishek Bachchan eventually essayed. The story begins aimlessly with an NRI dude dropping his emotional nani back to the labyrinth by lanes of old Delhi 6-the quintessential postal address of a communal cauldron in the capital. What happens when they return forms the rest of the reel story.
As the film unspools, it is difficult to decide if it is a tale of angst of a middle girl who wants to run away to Bombay to become a model or a Kala Bandar or NRI grandson searching for his roots, or his on-off romance with the runaway wannabe model. Till the very end new characters pop into the frame confusing the cine-goer. The songs provide a breather. But the freshness of Sonam Kapoor in her second huge flop must have disheartened her. As a token of friendship Amitabh Bachchan leads the solo hero a shoulder to lean on. But it did not help. Director Rakeyesh Om Prakash Mehra’s third filmy venture failed to bring patrons into the cool multiplexes despite heat outside.
