Can one author based story be remade and interpreted by other generations? Sharatbabu’s classical novel Devdas set in early 19th century feudal Bengal has been remade for the third time in Bollywood. But this is a complete modern interpretation. With his track record, Anurag Kashayap, brings in a radical element in his narration. The film is bold and in tune with the current lot of potential modern Devdas’.

The film celebrates woman’s sexuality in different and shocking ways. Abhay Deol the main protagonist of the tale has contributed to the interesting screen play. As an actor he is a laudable genius. He makes you loathe him and sympathize with him at the same time, for his pitiable condition. Mahi Gill as Paro is comfortable in her skin, delivering superbly. Chanda is a teenage victim of MMS sex scandal, forced to join the flesh trade. Kalki Koechlin has done a passable job as Chanda. Devdas and Chanda don’t create sparks onscreen in spite of its climax, which is a let-down. The movie drag in the second half with repetitions.

The immorals of the new generation of young Indians makes it a soul searching film. Real life scandals (MMS scandal, BMW accident, drugs and sex) make the fictional narration believable. Even if the story is fictional the inspiration is more from real life stories. A juxtaposition of a 19th century novel and contemporary society is a rare feat. The film did not create controversies by moral policing but better reviews are an achievement by itself.
