Peepli Live is produced by Aamir Khan. It is written and directed by Anusha Rizvi.
The most dependable actor, Aamir Khan makes it a point that while he engages in making interesting movies with all the fun, a good storyline, excellent acting, other essential ingredients, he doesn’t miss out on moral responsibilities towards the nation and its people. If you don’t believe this, then have a look at his last couple of movies like TAARE ZAMEEN PAR where he discussed the mind of children who are suffering from a rare disease or 3 IDIOTS where he attacked the decadent education system.
Peepli Live is the story of a poor farmer Natha [Omkar Das Manikpuri] who decides to end his life so that after his death his family members can benefit from the government grant. But the situation turns worse when everybody right from the politicians to the journalist and the bureaucrats become a part and parcel of this show, where no one is concerned about how Natha feels. The movie is a mocking satire on this sensitive issue of rural India.
A satire on the farmers’ suicides and subsequent media and political response, Peepli Live competed in the Sundance Film Festival, the first film from India to achieve this feat. However due to the offensive language in the movie, it got an ‘A’ adult certificate in India. The movie was picked up by specialty German distribution company Rapid Eye Movies for a special screening at the Berlin International Film Festival.
