Raavan is created a curiosity in the minds of the people through its slick trailers. All Mani Ratnam films get a huge response, and Raavan also managed the same. It shaped enormous expectations worldwide. Which is also quite obvious, as it’s been marked as a Mani Ratnam’s film starring Bollywood’s number one real life wedded couple Abhishek and Aishwarya. The trio of Mani Ratnam, Abhishek and Aishwarya previously came together in Guru which was a reasonable success at the box office.
Raavan is loosely inspired by the epic Ramayana. The film has been made in three different languages and is a remake of a Tamil movie. The cast of the Hindi and Tamil versions are different. Dev, the main protagonist played by Vikram, the lead actor of the Tamil version is a cop who falls in love with a classical dancer played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. They get married and after the wedding they come to a town where Beera, played by Abhishek Bachchan comes into the scene. He is a tribal leader. Dev being a cop targets him and accidently kills his sister. This annoys Beera and he in turn kidnaps Ragini to take revenge. This police folly starts a violent battle between the tribals and the cops. Abhishek is nothing short of brilliant, portraying Beera in various get ups.
The cinematography of the movie is worth a watch, but the part of the movie that attracts you towards the movie halls is the songs. Oscar winner A.R. Rahman’s music united with Gulzar’s lyrics is mesmerizing.
